Improvisation is a critical component to any music classroom. When students are improvising, they are expressing their own musical ideas and developing their creativity. Improvising also inspires students to take chances by experimenting with various musical elements. Improvisation also fosters collaboration and teamwork amongst students in order to produce a musical experience. In the Orff classroom, the teacher can scaffold the lesson in order for students to feel safe to take musical risks and make mistakes while learning to improvise. There are so many possibilities for using children’s literature as a starting point for improvisation in the music classroom! This session will touch on four ways to use children’s literature as the beginning of musical improvisation in the elementary music classroom.
